Public Health Engineering in the Spotlight!
Do you know what a public health engineer does? In Putnam County, the Public Health Engineers work to protect the environment from pollutants that can harm people's health. Septic systems and individual and community water supplies installed in Putnam County are all reviewed and approved by the engineers at the health department. Ensuring these systems are built to function properly is one way that Public Health Engineer Anthony Fricchione helps to protect the environment in Putnam County. What is your favorite part of working at the health department?
I enjoy the great relationships with my co-workers, contractors, engineers, and the public.
Is there a particularly rewarding experience you’d like to share?
Anytime I can provide knowledge about water and septic, both public and private systems, is rewarding. Whether I’m helping an engineer through a design question or answering general septic system questions from a Putnam County resident, I feel the more knowledge we have, the better we can keep the environment clean.
What does your day-to-day work look like?
What I like is that every day is unique. The day usually consists of witnessing soil testing for septic system repairs and new construction, inspecting septic system installations, wastewater treatment plants, and public water supplies, and reviewing engineered plans for public water systems and septic systems. My workday has a great balance between being outdoors interacting with engineers, contractors, and the residents of the County, and being at my desk reviewing plans.
What do you wish the public knew about your job?
I wish the public knew how dedicated not only myself, but my other coworkers are in protecting the health of all Putnam County residents. The engineering department’s main goal is to protect drinking water utilizing the best available engineering practices.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Communication is key. When everyone is on the same page, things always go a lot smoother.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that being reliable and honest builds a strong relationship with co-workers, contractors, and the public.
Information about private wells, water systems, septic systems, and more can all be found on the Putnam County Department of Health’s website at https://putnamcountyny.gov/health/environmental. Forms and licensing information for contractors can also be found at this website.
